The Benefits of Practicing Taichi in Comparison with Other Martial Arts

Taichi Push-Hands PracticeGuangping Taichi is a deep, demanding practice that will strengthen your body, your mind and your life. Pursuing taichi consistently will bring significant benefits for your health and when practiced over time with appropriate pushhands and sparring will help you develop fighting skills.

When choosing a martial art practice to invest your time and energy in, the most important first step is to know what you want to get out of it. Not knowing what you want to achieve through practice will result in distracting thoughts of the grass being greener on the side of every other form of martial arts.  Knowing what you want to get out of practice will help you to enjoy what you do wholeheartedly.

Even if it takes you 20 years to answer this question with confidence, as it was with me, you will be happier and your practice will be stronger when you know why you practice.

The chart below illustrates my perspective on some of the potential achievements that people can reasonably expect through diligently practicing the different martial arts.

This chart is based on general experiences and observations.  Any teacher of any art can potentially emphasize any element of practice,  but the chart below suggests what you are more likely to find in each art.
