The Health Benefits of Taichi

A Taichi Student Practices ZhanzhuangTaichi is almost universally recognized for its ability to benefit the health of the persevering student, and there is no shortage of stories of miraculous recovery that we can use to inspire ourselves to experience our own significant improvement.

Historical teacher Chen Man Qing cured himself of tuberculosis through taichi practice.  I have heard tales of individuals recovering 100% from AIDS and cancer, and I have personally witnessed weakened, tired adults become quite robust, strong and limber through practice.

The evidence of the healing potential of taichi also goes well beyond the historical and anecdotal as taichi’s ability to facilitate healing has been acknowledged by such mainstream medical sources as the Harvard University Medical School, WebMD  and the Mayo Clinic.  These well-respected voices in the health world provide well documented research that support their impressive assertions concerning the healing potential of taichi.

An article in the May, 2009 edition of  Harvard Women’s Health Watch, provides examples of research that shows Taichi providing relief and improved quality of life for people dealing with the following issues:

  • Arthritis
  • Low bone density
  • Breast cancer
  • Heart disease
  • Heart failure
  • Hypertension
  • Parkinson’s disease
  • Sleep problems
  • Strokes

WebMD cites studies showing taichi and qigong as beneficial for healthy balance, strength, blood pressure, sleep and immune system, and effective for improving the well-being of people with the following health-challenges:

  • Osteoarthritis
  • Shingles
  • Strokes
  • Fibromyalgia

The Mayo Clinic’s online resource states that “preliminary evidence suggests that tai chi may offer numerous benefits beyond stress reduction,” and gives the following examples of health benefits:

  • Improved mood
  • Improved strength and coordination
  • Improved sleep
  • Lower blood pressure
  • Improved cardiovascular fitness in older adults
  • Relief from chronic pain
  • Increased energy
